In this article, we will know why we all should understand geopolitics and why it should be a concern for you if you are away from this.
Today’s world is globalized. Anything that takes place here in Asia will certainly have some effect in the West or Africa. People build nations and nations together build the globalized world. So, anything that is going on in the world will have a certain impact on the people regardless of its geography.
Let’s take an example to understand it — Currently, there is a hot issue that is in discussion worldwide i.e. — the Russia-Ukraine war. Ukraine as a country contributes world as a source of food supply( also regarded as “The Breadbasket of Europe” ) and has remained a major transit route for Russian gas to Europe. Russia launched a “special military operation” in Ukraine in February 2022. This operation should have nothing to do with Asia, but you know, in reality, this war has impacted every country on the planet.
The Russia-Ukraine war has had a major impact on all countries. The countries in Africa and Europe faced a sudden food crisis. Ukraine halted the export of wheat to many African nations due to war. This created havoc in those countries that were dependent on Ukraine for its food security. In Europe, they observed skyrocketing food inflation. It has a similar impact in the USA and other countries. The worst food inflation hit Lebanon and that was 332% in the year to June, ahead of Zimbabwe’s 255% increase and Venezuela’s 155%. Turkey was the fourth worst hit with a food inflation rate of 94%.
So, with this example, we understood the importance of geopolitical events in our day-to-day life.
Now, you can argue why ordinary people should be concerned with these geopolitical events. We have elected a government to look after these matters.
Here, We need to understand the fundamentals of electing a government. See, many parties contest elections in democratic nations. Yes, Democracy is the very term that explains why we should be concerned with geopolitical events. However, In the free world, in democratic countries, we elect our government to take charge of the affairs (whether it is internal or external) of the country to serve the best interest of our people. To elect a responsible government we have to be aware of the internal and external situations of the country and the world so that we choose only those, who can serve the best interest of the country and the world.
Some authoritarian regimes always try to take advantage of the freedom of democratic nations. Because, in these countries, people enjoy their freedom of thought and expression and reserve their right to choose the best-suited path for his/her life, authoritarian regimes try to manipulate and influence their thought and the way they see the world. So, to prevent ourselves from disguise imposing an artificial environment of our thought by these regimes, that forced us to believe that the environment is actually of his, we need to be aware of those influences. And, so, to be aware, we need to understand geopolitical events that are constantly impacting our lives.
